Former Pak capt. Asif Iqbal big player in match fixing

Former Pak Captain Asif Iqbal has emerged as a major global match-fixing and betting operator. He used to provide information to bookies about matches in any part of the world.

Another signficant revelation has been made by Anil Nagada alias Anil Steel, a Mumbai-based bookie, who says former Pakistan captain Asif Iqbal who has been in the thick of the match-fixing controversy in his country had provided him information about the pitches, weather and probable results among other things about matches played in any part of the world.

Anil Steel provided gifts of jewellery to Asif and his family members in return for the information. It was Anil Steel who had introduced bookie Mukesh Gupta alias 'MK' to Asif in 1996 in Calcutta during the World Cup inaugural ceremony.

Anit Steel also met Ajay Jadeja in Mukesh Gupta's hotel room around this time. He lost a heavy amount of money as a result of his association with MK and stopped contacts with him some time in 1997.

The report, submitted by CBI to Sports Minister Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, on Monday recommended major corrective steps to put cricket back on rails.

"The crisis facing circket today is very different and far more sinister than the 'body line' controversy. Cricket as it is played at present does not appear to be the same game played by Sir Don Bradman or Neville Cardus wrote about.

"The romanticism associated with the game is perhaps gone for ever. Increasingly, in the playing fields around the world, the music of a sweetly timed stroke is being replaced by the harsh cacaphony of ringing cell phones.

"Both inducements and threats to players are bound to increase in view of the big money involved in gambling on cricket and the entry of the underworld. Major corrective steps need to be taken to put cricket back on rails, " notes the report prepared by the crime branch of the premier investigating agency, under the supervision of Special Director R N Sawani and director R K Raghavan.
