Fear stalks English cricket

Whatever the outcome of the inquiry against Alec Stewart, the cricket world here has reeled under the 'shock', that one of their's and that too Stewart has come under suspicion. All papers have devoted a number of pages to the issue.

But everyone seems to be careful, no one has come in unconditional support for Stewart. The media and commentators here had criticised Indian authorities when Hansie Cronje was named. They are now being careful. Even the leader, The Times treads carefully. "The force of Alec Stewart's denial that he had ever accepted money from an Indian bookmaker in exchange for information will come as a relief to his many admirers."

But it adds that "his (Stewart's) statement cannot, though , disguise the embarrassment of Lord MacLaurin... who called for any individual facing such alleagtions to be suspended --- a sanction that he is not prepared to impose on his own player".

Cricket commentator Michael Henderson, while admitting that "English cricket has been dragged into the whole revolting business" said in the Daily Telegraph, "it is clear that the Indian police investigators, dogged and thorough, have been the heroes of this unsavoury episode and they are not through yet." He adds that "things do not look pleasant for Stewart".
