CBI report has loopholes, failed to probe certain angles

The Central Bureau of Investigation has claimed that it has done a massive exercise to reach to the root of match-fixing and betting in Indian cricket and found many guilty of certain wrongdoings, but its inquiry seems to have overlooked many aspects relating to the scandal.

In its 162- page inquiry report, the CBI appears to have not touched on the revelations made by certain key witnesses with regard to specific players. The investigators also erred by not examining certain individuals who were reported to be in the know of things about the scandal.

Kapil's Properties: Though the CBI has given a clean chit to Kapil Dev on the allegations of bribing made by Manoj Prabhakar, it failed to probe the deposition of former BCCI Vice-President Sunil Dev who had alleged that Kapil Dev owned a lot of property, including a flat in London, a house in Sunder Nagar, some residential property in Maharani Bagh, Safdarjung Enclave and some property in Chandigarh.

Sunil Dev, the former Indian team manager, had told investigators that it was difficult to believe that all this could be owned purely through income as a Cricketer.

CBI also went through the 'tehelka.Com' tapes and evaluated the observations made about Kapil Dev by Jayawant Lele, Ajit Wadekar, Navjot Singh Sidhu, Prashant Vaidya, Ravi Shastri and Sunil Gavaskar, but could find no credible evidence from their observations.
