Irani, Ajay Jadeja, Mongia questioned

FORMER CBI Joint Director and BCCI special commissioner R Madhavan today examined tainted cricketers Nayan Mongia and Ajay Jadeja besides former physio Ali Irani, amid speculation that former captain Mohammed Azharuddin would surface here for interrogation.

However, rumours of Azhar being quizzed here turned out to be unfounded, as Mr Madhavan told a private television channel that it would not be possible for him to examine the Hyderabad-based player "even if he really decided to appear before me."

The second and the final day's examination by Mr Madhavan as part of an independent inquiry ordered by the Cricket Board to clear alleged inaccuracies in the CBI report, was conducted amid tight security.

The players were taken in through a back entrance to avoid media glare. Mongia, Jadeja and Irani were not allowed to speak to the large battery of mediapersons and television crew assembled in the lobby of a star hotel near the airport. The players had themselves said they did not want to meet the media. Mr Madhavan, who will submit his report to the BCCI before its general body meeting on November 29, was scheduled to brief the press later in the evening after winding up his two-day examination.
