India has been a favourite destination since ancient times for travellers from every corner of the world. Some came to see one of the oldest civilization, others to expand their trade and yet others to invade and conquer large chunks of the northern plains. Each one of them left an indelible mark on this exotic land with mystic religious beliefs, diverse cultures, snow covered challenging peaks of the Himalayas, harvest rich gangetic plains, hundreds of kilometers of coastline shadowed with beautiful coconut groves and the sand dunes of the Thar desert.

Braving the cold desert in Leh-Ladakh

With the passage of time modernisation has taken its toll, but the rich heritage survives--in the thick foliage of  jungles where the tigers roar, the temples of Khajuraho with sensual symbols carved out in pieces of stone, the old palaces and forts of Rajasthan, the chanting of hymns in the Buddhist monasteries, the rich system of ancient Indian medicine- the ayurveda being practised in tiny towns.

A folk musician in Rajasthan

Dressed in their traditional headgear-the colourfully printed turbans, tall and dark tanned men of Rajasthan look after their camels as the womenfolk in their myriad colored dresses- the lehngas and cholis, tend to their daily chores. Silver bands and trinkets adorn their arms and ankles. Not far away in the sub-himalayan region of Himachal Pradesh, the traditions are different, the dresses are different and climate is cold-at times dipping below freezing points. The famous apple orchard belt of this region is known for its Dussehra festival before the onset of the snowy winter. budha.gif (33770 bytes)
