Karwar

From Dakshina Kannada as you move upward you enter Uttara Kannada with Karwar as its capital. The beautiful verdant land beckons you with its lyrical beaches, sacred pilgrim centers and historical towns. 519 kms north-west of Bangalore, Karwar has one of the most beautiful beaches in the country, said to have inspired Tagore to pen his first drama.

Around Karwar (Distances and directions from Karwar):

60 kms south, along the coast is Gokarna, famous for the 'Atmalinga' in the ancient temple here. It is also a center for Sanskrit learning. 60 kms from here is Yana - a deserted township with unique rock formations.

135 kms south of Karwar is Bhatkal, a historical township. This ancient port town has temples of Vijayanagara times and has many interesting Jain monuments. 16 kms away is the scenic holy place of Murdeshwar. The temple here attracts a lot of devotees and tourists. The Pigeon Island is off the Murdeshwar coast. The beaches at Gokarna, Bhatkal and Murdeshwar are undiscovered and thankfully unspoilt.

140 kms away is Banavasi, a temple town mentioned in the Hindu epics, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata.

125 kms to the north-east is the Dandeli Sanctuary.

Karwar is well connected by road to Goa, Belgaum, Hubli-Dharwar, Mangalore and Mysore.
